The Spirit of Norway House Cree Nation The Spirit of Norway House Cree Nation

Chapter 3
The 20th century saw the expanding economies of southern Canada looking to the north for hydroelectric power. In chapter three, we show how the Province of Manitoba, through Manitoba Hydro, built numerous generating stations, control structures and reservoirs across the north. These mega-projects impacted the hunting, trapping and fishing activities of the Norway House Cree Nation and several other neighboring bands. Roads, electricity and rapid modernization now connected the once isolated communities like Norway House to the rest of the world. The challenge was to overcome the problems associated with development while embracing the exciting opportunities that ushered in this new era in the north.
